Now that you have your conceal carry permit, and it’s getting into vacation season, here’s what you need to know about crossing state lines.

When traveling with a gun, you should always make sure it is securely stored. Your gun should be unloaded and placed in a case or lock box. Your magazines and ammo should be placed in a separate case or lock box as well. The storage is the simple part. When it comes to the method of travel, we need to look at the laws.

For people traveling in cars or buses, having your gun and magazine & ammo stored in separate lock boxes will be enough. But concealed carry licenses in one state may not transfer to another state. If you are traveling you must make sure that your concealed carry permit is recognized in the state you are going to. You can see which states comply with Ohio gun laws here.

But what about if you are flying? Traveling by plane with a gun is a little different, but still fairly easy. Here is what the TSA says about traveling with a gun:

“You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only. Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter. The container must completely secure the firearm from being accessed. Locked cases that can be easily opened are not permitted. Be aware that the container the firearm was in when purchased may not adequately secure the firearm when it is transported in checked baggage.”

Just like traveling by car or bus, it is important to make sure you can legally have your gun in the state you are flying to.

Traveling by train has similar regulations. For Amtrack, your gun must be in a lock box and the magazine & ammo must be in a separate lock box. You also must notify Amtrack 24 hours before your ride if you are bringing a firearm. If you are using a local train company it is important to contact someone who can tell you the specifics of their firearm travel rules.
