Description

Lot#5  Extremely Rare G.W. Morse/Burgess patent Lever-Action Rifle in .45-70 Govt. This rifle was manufactured manufactured by between late 1873 and 1880 with a total estimated manufacturing run of less than 2000 rifles and carbines combined. This was considered the 1st Model. The serial number of this one is: 260. The gun features a factory 23” round barrel, a barrel band, full military-type forend and a saddle ring. The gun is in very good ++ condition with a lot of the original bluing turning to a beautiful even grey patina. The metal surfaces are all in excellent condition with no scratches, dents, rust or pitting. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition with no dents, chips, scratches or crack anywhere. It has highly figured uncheckered American walnut straight stock & crescent buttplate with Winchester style sliding brass trap and a nice clear coat that really shows well. The top tang is marked “A. BURGESS” with patent dates of January 7 & October 19, 1875. The barrel address, forward of rear sight, reads “G.W. MORSE / PATENTED OCT 28TH 1856?. This is a rare and possibly a “once in a lifetime” opportunity to obtain this special firearm that was so important in the development and progression of lever action rifles.    Estimated  Value: Low: $9,500  High: $13,000
